They were talking about LATERAL g's. The aircraft was slammed sideways by turbulence. The rolling wing tip vortex slammed the plane SIDEAWAYS.

With all due respect, .3 - .8 lateral G's is far from a slam. Consider that lying on your side in bed, you experience 1G of lateral force.
