Well, the "Party of Small Government" has done it again. I wonder of the GOP ever tires of castrating itself.

"Federalized" airport security will be as effective in keeping "bad guys" off of the planes, as the "Federal INS" is in keeping the "bad guys" out or removing them from the U.S. to begin with.
We need MORE FOREIGN STUDENTS! Especially from the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan et. al....
Perhaps our new Governor Warner in Virginia will lead the charge to bring more into Virginia colleges to rake in the big bucks they bring.

Don't we have a graphic of a Republican shooting himself in the foot? We need one about now!

Shouldn't the heading be "Senate Wins on Federalized Airport Workers." After all, the Senate voted 100-0 for federalized airport workers and I think there are a couple of republicans in the senate.

You know, I was against the position being federalized because I believe in free enterprise system. However, national security is the job of our federal government. The police department and fire department is operated by cities. The constitution states that our citizens will be kept safe and it mandates the federal government to do that. What it does not mandate is all the fluff jobs that are thrown on us by congress. It does not mandate a department of education which I believe has drained our education system for nothing. There are many things that I believe the government has gotten into that it should not have, but security is not one of them. In other words, in theory I am not sure I disagree with this move.

If the idea of airport security is to provide for our common defense, then federalization is appropriate. Now, the issue about not being able to fire incompetent feds is valid, but really separate. We need Congress and the President to take the iniative to change the law to hold federal bureaucrats responsible--do your job right or get canned. This should be applied throughout the federal government and state governments--we'd all be far better off.

Ideologues made a mountain out of a molehill over this one. This could have been a "win-win" situation, but the House Reps. turned it into a senseless battle. The public doesn't care who hires these guys, but they know that their government has a duty to protect their security, especially when traveling by air, especially during time of war.

I part company with Limbaugh and others on this one. I think it's a reasonable bill.

Patience folks, this ain't over yet. Let's not look at this like a 50 minute sitcom, waiting for an ending before the end of an hour. There's still time to "remind" our Republican reps where their next campaign contributions are coming from.

Is there a possibility that G.W. will veto this piece of garbage??? I believe he said that he would veto a bill that forced the federalization of airport security. Europe already tried this and it was a miserable failure.

The clincher's gonna be *what* the GOP's going to get in return for this...
Ahhh...they did strike *some* kind of bargain with the socialist clymers.

...didn't they?

These turds were worried that they might have to work through Thanksgiving, so they caved. I guess, in their minds, any excuse is better than none. Somebody remind me again, what's the difference between them and the democrats?

Well, it appears to me to be just another jobs program for minority workers and new immigrants, like most federal jobs programs.

The fact that NPR still exists should tell us the GOP will lose and lose and lose.

What really caused the defeat of privatized security provision, I suspect, were numerous reports of lapses in airport security -- stun guns, knives, shotguns, and so forth -- making it through existing private security systems.

Anyway, I suspect the GOP figured this wasn't an issue to fight to the death on.

I can't wait for Rush to bend over and say this is the best thing since K-Y jelly was given to prison inmates.

Yeah! O baby, how do you love us now!

Just got on and haven't read the previous 160 posts, so very likely my post is a duplication. It is clear to me that the main reason the dems are pushing for this is not increased public safety but the enormous increase that will result in membership in the government workers union - which translates into more money and more votes for them.

Personally, I look forward to Fox News exposing the incompetence of the Federal workers sometime down the road. The other networks won't do it, of course, so hopefully Fox won't be afraid to embarass the congress critters by catching security lapses caused by the bumbling and overpaid Federal workers.
