Whos Keeping Track?
Foreign Students Often Remain After Their Visas Expire
Nov. 14 When Bangladeshi student Omar flunked out of the U.S. college he was attending, his student visa became invalid.
A sampling of foreign students had no objection to the original strong regulations, but one Pakistani student at Smith College in Massachusetts, Sharmeen Obaid, was adamant that asking foreign students to carry a card was not a good solution.
"Are you going to have tourists carry things on them?" she asked.
"I'm giving this country as much as the country's giving me," she added. "It's a two-way road. We're learning things. You're learning things from us."
. . . .
Her address at Smith College is:
Obaid, Sharmeen ('02)

How about dropping her an e-mail and letting her know your feelings!
Would love to know more about this pilot tracking system at 20 schools. How much government $ did they get and what are their responsibilities? If they do not report when immigrant students do not show up for classes, are they fined? How much government money are they given for each immigrant student they have??
That's a bunch of horse-pucky. The IRS can sure as heck find just about anyone they want. The INS has been inept for far too many years. It needs a complete overhaul, beginning at the top.
