The surprisingly swift advance of Northern Alliance soldiers, aided by U.S. bombing and special forces, has once again turned Washington punditry upside down."
--Washington Post editorial

"The chaotic retreat by Taliban forces from Kabul, and indeed from most of northern Afghanistan, is a dramatic development that did not seem conceivable even a week ago. But the Northern Alliance's triumph does not, by itself, achieve the basic American objective of defeating the Taliban and destroying the terrorist organization Al Qaeda."
--New York Times editorial

"We give the Northern Alliance an air force and they embarrass us with savage force."
--Maureen Dowd, New York Times columnist, decries retaliatory killing of Taliban by opposition forces.

"I think attaching ANWR to the economic recovery bill would send as clear a signal as you could send that [Republicans] are not really serious about passing an economic recovery bill this year."
--Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.)

"I don't think it's a damn bit funny. I don't think it's cute. It's not responsible for them to speak in these terms."

Dowd is silly and lightweight, and has been since forever. Until September 11, it didn't matter, because the times themselves were silly (we were arguing about "lockboxes", for goodness sakes). Times are no longer silly, and she is trying to play catch up and become a heavyweight. However, she just isn't up to it.
