Alliance Envoy Says Kandahar Falls to Opposition

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (Reuters) - Northern Alliance ambassador in Tajikistan Said Ibrohim Hikmat told reporters that the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar fell into the hands of the opposition and tribal rebels Wednesday.

``Today the forces of the Northern Alliance entered Kandahar,'' the ambassador said.

``They went in with the support of the local population which was rebelling,'' he said. ``The town is now under the control of the northern alliance. There are no Taliban in the city.''

The report could not be independently confirmed but one tribal leader said the Taliban had thrown a defensive circle around Kandahar and would fight off any attempt to capture the city.

Correct. When a previous poster said Kandahar was all OURS, I had to wonder if he was a Tajik tribesman. Have you noticed the U.S. military hardly ever controls territory anymore? It only bombs one group of people off theirs and some other group then moves in. Kinda weird in terms of military strategy, although I fully understand that "ground troops" are our weakest link.

I wonder of the Toweliban left the Arabs, Pakistanis, and Chechens holding the bag the way they did in Mazar e Sharif and Kabul.

The reason they will fight is that many of them are arabs with no state to go to, and all of them fear being killed in any case.

The haste in which they have fled the major cities should leave plenty of interesting clues as to the terrorist network, and possibly Osama's location.

Send in US forces to gather that information and analyze it, pronto!

So where's Osama and the murderous Mullah Omar?

Tehran is reporting that Mullah Omar has fled to Pakistan.

Given the source I can't say whether it's true or not. As far as Osama goes who knows...your guess is as good as mine.

When the Taliban gave up Kabul without a fight I thought that they were conducting a strategic retreat, to gain the political high ground. But with this news, obviously the Taliban has ceased to exist as a credible and coherent fighting force.

I can't believe they are being forced into the hills on the eve of Ramadan!! How hateful!!

On a serious note...they are headed up to the hills and winter is approaching...wonder how they're going to keep warm? Could a heat sensor detect it from a cave? I thought winter was a friend to the Taliban.

Moamar Quaddafi's son believe it or not was working for the girls' release and I heard they were released. Who knows for sure until they are in American hands and back with their families nearby in Pakistan.

This is impossible. Only last week the Brigadiers were informing us that three weeks of bombing had only strengthened the Taliban's resolve.

LOL. It also seems to have strengthened their acting skills. They are doing a great impression of headless chickens.

Go for it, now it is the clean-up operation.

It just might be considered that Afghanistan main cites are all in the hands of the Northern Alliance. Perhaps they can even be motiviated to get their own politics together faster than the U.N. can mobilize their interim govt as well.
