"At no point did Clinton suggest any causal or moral connection whatsoever between America's ancient sins and contemporary terrorist acts.

He did say that this country is "still paying a price" for its past. Who can deny it? But he also said that "the people who died represent, in my view, not only the best of America, but the best of the world that I worked hard for eight years to build . . . The terrorists killed people who came to America not to die, but dream, from every continent, from dozens of countries, most every religion on the face of the earth, including Islam. They, those that died in New York, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania, are part of a very different world and a very different world view than those who killed them."

Then, who is "still paying a price?" If not the victims and their families, and all of us, who? Lyons, as usual, wants it both ways. Clinton is obviously talking out of both sides of his mouth; in an attempt to garner the support of the "Blame America First and Always" crowd, get a zinger in there to appease the "pro reparation" ultra left, and still wants to "blithely" put one past virtually everyone else, with Clinton's own ingenuous version of semantic "plausible deniability". And Lyons calls conservative Clinton critics hypocrites! An X-ray of Gene Lyon's spine must look like a double pretzel right about now, as he has done so much twisting of the truth and has engaged in such prodigious mental gymnastics all for the sake of letting Clinton get away with rhetorically making a ass of himself. Why in the world doesn't Gene just SUPPORT the obvious intent of Clinton in this speech, and try to justify Clinton's reasoning here, rather than to split hairs and pretend that he actually didn't say it?

My guess is that this man is on a perpetual Quixotic mission to somehow exonerate and exculpate the most corrupt man ever to hold the office of President of the United States. Truly a vain quest, as I see it. Why bother at this juncture, especially when so many former Clinton supporters are abandoning him? Doubtless, to Gene Lyon's chagrin, Bill Clinton and his "wife coconspirator" Hillary continue to prove to us and the world the depths of their innate mendacity and corruption, with every awkward, obtuse, and idiotic public pronouncement they make. Lyon's sworn duty seems to be to explain away the obvious, and decry anyone who might rightly criticize this noxious couple. He will NEVER get it. Like some sort of American leftist from the 1930's, who will never admit that Stalin was a bloody merciless tyrant, he will never admit what we on the Conservative side have long ago faced and dealt with; the election of Bill Clinton the liar, perjurer, criminal, traitor, and rapist was an enormous and deadly mistake... one for which the American people are "still paying a price."

At least Clinton's implication was that America is paying to the terrorists. In a perverse way, he is a more intellectually honest liar than Gene Lyons.

Wow! Great statement, I love it!

OMG...a Clinton butt-boy giving the world a lecture on "ethics." This is too funny...in New York we call this "chutzpah."

(The definition of which is the man who is convicted of killing his parents and then throwing himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphan).

Gene Lyons has cried wolf too many times to be considered credible on anything, anymore. He's a fraud and poltroon.

I don't think of it as crying wolf. He is intentionally lying knowing that the sheeple (i.e. liberals) who care nothing about the truth will eat this up and start passing it around as fact. Remember Gene telling Geraldo around March or April of '98 that the Monica story would turn out to be false? He was dead serious; like Joe Conason he is either the stupidest person alive, or he thinks the rest of us are stupid.

Either way, you are correct that he is a major league fraud.

First, it's seen as futile, like starting a campaign to convince 20 million morons that pro wrestling is fixed

See how stupid this guy is. He thinks pro wrestling is fixed. Ha!

Your screen name reminded me that Clinton's bombing of that aspirin factory KILLED a janitor, yet little was made of this fact....the unnecessary killing of an innocent human being...in the press.

I'll never forget Madelein Albright and the other clinton cabinet members' press conference outside on the steps saying there was "credible" evidence that....blah, blah, blah. They NEVER acknowledged that they had been lied to by their boss.

"profession" of journalism

Gene Lyons wouldn't know the meaning of that. He's not a "journalist". He's a message bearer for the Clintons. He always has been and always will be because he loves the spotlight and the CLINTONS. It doesn't matter if he shows his IGNORANCE only that he protects his "friends". They would spit on him in a minute if he was no longer of any use to them.

I could be wrong here, but I have the distinct feeling that this example (and others) are not clintonistas acting "on their own". I have nothing to back this up, but my sense is that they still get their marching orders and talking points from the evil ones. Anyone have any views on this?

I agree with you. It's almost as though press releases are sent out to all their shills so all the words and sentences are parsed just so.

I still can't get over the fact that so much of the public swallows this crap, hook, line and sinker. Have they no brains?

When Bill Clinton spoke at Georgetown University last week, he said very clearly that America is paying a price for slavery of the past and that native Americans were disposessed and killed.

You are SO right, no matter what Mr. Lyons says:

From the speech:

First, we have to win the fight we are in and in that I urge you to keep three things in mind. First of all, terror, the killing of noncombatants for economic, political, or religious reasons has a very long history as long as organized combat itself, and yet, it has never succeeded as a military strategy standing on its own, but it has been around a long time. Those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless. Indeed, in the first Crusade, when the Christian soldiers took Jerusalem, they first burned a synagogue with 300 Jews in it, and proceeded to kill every woman and child who was Muslim on the Temple mound. The contemporaneous descriptions of the event describe soldiers walking on the Temple mound, a holy place to Christians, with blood running up to their knees. I can tell you that that story is still being told to today in the Middle East and we are still paying for it. Here in the United States, we were founded as a nation that practiced slavery and slaves were, quite frequently, killed even though they were innocent. This country once looked the other way when significant numbers of Native Americans were dispossessed and killed to get their land or their mineral rights or because they were thought of as less than fully human and we are still paying the price today. Even in the 20th century in America people were terrorized or killed because of their race. And even today, though we have continued to walk, sometimes to stumble, in the right direction, we still have the occasional hate crime rooted in race, religion, or sexual orientation. So terror has a long history.

The second point I want to make is, in that long history, no terrorist campaign standing on its own has ever won, and conventional military strategies that have included terrorism with it have won because of conventional military power, and terrorism has normally been a negative. I will just give you one example from my childhood. In the Civil War, General Sherman waged a brilliant military campaign to cut through the South and go to Atlanta. It was significant and very helpful in bringing the Civil War to a close in a way to, thank God, save the Union. On the way, General Sherman practiced a relatively mild form of terrorism-he did not kill civilians, but he burned all the farms and then he burned Atlanta, trying to break the spirit of the Confederates. It had nothing whatever to do with winning the Civil War, but it was a story that was told for a hundred years later, and prevented America from coming together as we might otherwise have done. When I was a boy growing up in the segregated South, when we should have been thinking about how we were going to integrate the schools and give people equal opportunity, people were making excuses for unconscionable behavior by talking about what Sherman had done a hundred years ago. So, it is important to remember that normally terrorism has backfired and never has it succeeded on its own.
