Er, that would make light "just slightly faster" than sound by a factor of just slightly more than 900,000.

Well, not quite, although you may be saying this tongue in cheek.
At, say, 45 degrees F, the speed of sound would be about 752 mph. The speed of light, at 186,000 miles per second, translates to 669,600,000 mph. Slight difference, I'd say. :)
Yeah. Just a wee bit faster. Like, by how many orders of magnitude? ;-)

Light traveling at 186,300 miles per second, and sound traveling at 750 miles per hour, means that light travels 894 thousand times faster than sound.

On point 2, let's see (from physics class): light travels at 386,000mph and sound (in air) at 1000 feet/second or about 300mph. Thus, light goes nearly instantly over these eye-witness distance while the sound takes about 5 seconds per mile. Easily one could see an exploision/fire prior to hearing it.
