I'm amazed at the number of folks who appear to WANT this to be a terrorist attack. Haven't we gotten back to the basic stats on airline accidents yet? This is likely a very tragic accident, not some terrorist attack.

No one WANTS this to be a terrorist attack, MHG. You're right, it could simply be a very tragic coincidence. However, given 1) we're at war, 2) it was a plane crash, 3) in NYC, 4) today we observe Veteran's Day....

Well, I think it's certainly understandable that people are doing some fierce speculating.

Let's hope the houses that were hit were empty. Everybody at school or at work. The schools here are open today.

Eh, I'd strongly disagree..but the key is people SUBCONSCIOUSLY want it to be a terrorist attack, because it's actually less frightening than if it was mechanical failure.

People desperately crave order, meaning, and purpose....and despise randomness and chance. This is what drives most conpsiracy nuttery...when bad things happen, it's actually MORE comforting to believe they are the result of a vast organized conspiracy, or of deliberate acts of people, than that they are the result of a few people, or of natural causes or a sequence of rare mechanical failures, etc.

It's more comforting to believe JFK or MLK were the victims of large conspiracies than lone random nuts..it gives the deaths of each more purpose, more meaning, and less randomness. It's more comforting, in a strange, subconscious way to believe TWA 800 was shot down by the Navy and then covered up (as strange as it sounds) than that it was the result of an unusual mechanical failure.
