Yo, Bob! Read the eyewitness reports: whole wing fell off, tail recovered from the bay. That's one hell of an engine failure to take the tail off, too.

You're right, eno_. I'll ignore the reports I've been seeing and reading, and forget about my experience. It must have been a missile or a bomb. Couldn't have been anything else.
To: Tennessee_Bob
Hey, could be anything. Is there enough bang in a catastrophic engine failure to take the tail off the plane? Or is that more likely to be the result of a blast inside the fuselage? Jeez, don't take it personally. I would much prefer it was an accident. It just does not look like one.

This is why I love the FreeRepublic people with specific knowledge relating to an issue help all of us cut the the b/s and smoke and mirrors. Good job Bob.

Hmm... The destination of AA Flight 587 was Santo Domingo ("Holy Sunday") in the Dominican Republic.
The vertical stabilizer being found miles away in Jamaica Bay pretty much rules out anything but terrorism.

gesh... so now engines fail when they are due for a major overhaul? What happened to the built-in 50% to 100% safety margin?
To: Tennessee_Bob
Yep guys, Tennessee_Bob works for the airlines. Which one Bob?
To: Tennessee_Bob
Well... I'd use some "200 mph" duct tape and tape the monkey-wrench inside the engine cowl so that it didn't get sucked up immediately, but would eventually be torn loose from the airflow and the vibration. But we'll never know because it won't be tracable, just like the anthrax.
And the airlines are deemed so important to national security that it will probably be classified anyway.
To: Terrorista Nada
LOL...again with the disparaging remarks. Actually, I don't work in any aircraft related field. I work on computers now, my conspiracy theorist friend, and not for any airline.
So again, I ask...what are your credentials in aviation maintenance and accident investigation?
To: concerned about politics
I have a low tolerance for stupid people. How do you live with yourself, then? Sheesh.

gesh... so now engines fail when they are due for a major overhaul? What happened to the built-in 50% to 100% safety margin? It's still there. And no, they don't fail based on a maintenance schedule. And in a perfect world, they wouldn't fail at all. Not that it matters, after all, you guys have convinced me that it couldn't have been anything other than terrorist activities.
To: Terrorista Nada
Still with the cowling....where are you going to tape it so that it will fall into the flowpath so that no one can see it on a visual inspection? If you tape it anywhere inside the cowling, then it is out of the flowpath and away from the internals of the engine. If you tape it in the intake, it's going to be visible...unless you have some of that stealth duct tape that becomes identical to the surface it's taped on.
To: eno_
Hey...the United Airlines flight 232...a DC-10...suffered catastrophic engine failure...guess that was probably a terrorist action as well?
To: Tennessee_Bob
correction... "600 mph duct tape" So what "conspiracy" am I putting forth? Are you even aware we are at war?
We are getting tired of all the governement denials. How mant times have we read this quote in the last 2 months? Pitiful.
"And while organized terrorism has not been ruled out, so far we have found no direct link to organized terrorism."- FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III
To: Tennessee_Bob
Usama bin Laden could shoot Tennessee_Bob in the head and he'd think it was a gun cleaning accident. LOL.
To: Tennessee_Bob; Terrorista Nada
Yow, we have Pollyanna vs. Chicken Little. It probably ain't a self-exploding engine, and it probably ain't a wrench in the engine. It probably was a bomb in a suitcase, in the baggage compartment, unless the metal chunks from a bad engine (which Bob has documented are No Fun At All) are enough to chop the tail off the plane.

bin Laden sure didn't sound aware of that when he criticized the UN.Oh please. Where else would he ever find one place where the U.S. can be criticized with impunity 24/7? And it's not even our property, really.
Besides, as a target, the U.N. is relatively teensy. It's not tall and it's not big. Flying low enough, across Queens and the East River, to crash into a short little building like the U.N. would be problematic. You'd be just as likely to hit the FDR Drive running underneath it, or overshoot and hit the taller buildings behind it instead.
Actually, you could probably lob grenades by hand off the roof of the U.N. hotel and have an equally good chance of success. Plane not necessary!

"Now why would only the very rear of the plane drop into the bay if the engine fell off?"
It's pretty obvious that the tail separated prior to the engines and/or wings. That doesn't mean engine debris didn't cause the tail to separate but the video looks like the tail is completely intact with little or no damage. In fact, the latest video looks like there are two "tabs" on the bottom of the tail just like those tabs on model airplanes your glue together. IOW, that tail looks like it was removed in a very neat almost controlled manner.
BTW, the nets are now reporting that reports of a wing separtion were incorrect and that the aircraft segments they thought were a wing were the tail segment.

Thread #4 I've asked this on...
but will somebody please explain how an entire vertical stabilizer comes off the jet intact before impact ???
I hope this doesn't go the way of Flight 800...
