Pilotless flights would be indeed a single point of failure system, just like malicious access to the cockpit is a single point of failure today. However, implementing an ability to override the controls from the ground in an emergency, without routinely flying the planes solely from the ground would have prevented a 9/11 style attack. Since it won't be in everyday use, it can be made as secure as the famous "football" the president shleps around, that would trigger a nuclear war.

Just this weekend my family was trying to get me to fly instead of drive for the holiday.

Have a safe fun time anyway. I was just thinking what a nation of thrill seekers we are (myself excluded). Bigger and better roller coasters and white water rafting and enormous mountain climbing...how about "Take a plane for the thrill of a lifetime...you never know if you'll make it or not!" (Have a bud with that.)

Would be tougher to see during the day tho..Flight 800 was at night so one would easily see the missile. Maybe it has do with the fact that thousands of people have been laid off and maintanance of these planes is not what it should be.

It doesn't matter if the aircraft are piloted or pilotless if they can be overridden from the ground. You say it would be used on infrequently...but surely the equipment and system would have to be tested regularily. Just because something might have prevented a particular type of attack doesn't mean it should be implemented.

In regards to the security of the football, one of the major elements to is the lack of public knowledge about how it works. Do you seriously think that level of security can be maintained in the civil aircraft fleet?

An AA spokesman said this particular aircraft, a -600 series, was delivered new in 1988.

Fox just interviewed a women .. she says the plane hit right behind her house .. she said all she said was that a ball of flames came down .. no plane .. just a fire ball hit the house

Remember the maiden flight of the A320? At an airshow, the fly by wire overcompensated for the pilot, and it crashed into a bunch of trees...

My husband was just telling me about that crash too, trying to keep me from panicking. He's much more inclined to the "accident" theory with this one today, as the Airbus is so hard to control when anything goes wrong.

I am flying out next month for Christmas to Tennessee and have to take 2 connecting flights. I've never been scared of flying before, but I will be nervous the whole time now.

The funny thing is...I had told them earlier I wanted to go Greyhound instead of fly out and then the next day that incident happened where the passenger slit the driver's throat.

You just never know what could happen. Guess all you can do is have faith and live your life.
