Consider this: Hijackers pick low-load flights to reduce potential for resistance from passengers.
Bomber picks fully-loaded flight for maximum impact.

I was going to post the same thing you did. The military jets were in the area, and they could have seen the explosion and reported it . There were many eye witnesses who saw the explosion too.
I just don't want to be lied to about this, we don't need to be protected from the truth this time, as we have been in the past.
If this is terrorists, TELL US the TRUTH!
Personally, I think it is, just as I think Flight 800 was.

I will not accept that this was anything other than an fanatical Islamic terrorist attack. Luckilly for us, and especially for our soldiers in the field, cooler, more logical minds will.
P.S. How are things at the Flat Earth Society? :~)

In my own personal opinion, everything adds up to a bomb. NYC + Veterans Day holiday + "American" airlines = bomb in the cargo hold. Eyewitness reports indicate a separation of the wing from the plane, which would be consistent with a fracture in the underbelly.
Now, what we will hear from the administration could be very different. They cannot deny an explosion, but a catastrophic engine failure could cause a similar accident.

Every country, save for Eden or somewhere in Africa (depending on your feelings about evolution), is made up of immigrants.

I am watching FOX, with the FDNY doing their job, again. Actually, not again. Those poor men have never stopped since 9/11. My heart breaks for the emotional strain they must all be under. The poor people of New York, it seems neverending. Easy to feel: despair, despair. But God shall lift us up and heal our wounds.

American Airlines will be briefing soon and the White House will be briefing at noon.

There should have been a total round up of all foreign nationals who were employed at U.S. airports and a suspension from employment until FULL background checks could be completed. Anyone who doesn't check out, gets shipped out.Should have been done on 9-12. What are we waiting for?

I simply lack your faith in the infallibility of technology--regardless of the provider or implementer.
Much of the emphasis in aircraft design is in avoiding single point failure modes (no one thing, if it breaks, can jeopardize the integrity of the aircraft). Having a system that allows someone to take control from the ground (no matter how "secure") violates this time-tested design philosophy in a massive way.
Interesting thing about this approach is not only is it a single point of failure for any one aircraft but it may very well be a single point of failure for virtually every aircraft flying at any one time. Instead of 1-4 aircraft crashing, you can imagine *all* of them crashing at the same time if the remote control system is compromised.
Hypothetical question: Has an unbreakable encryption system ever been developed? The marketers might say "yes" but the cryptologists will always qualify their assertions with "not yet" or "it would be impossible with today's technology" or some such.
RE:
My post to you somehow disappeared; pardon me if this is a repost. 802.1X/RADIUS is a IETF network standard, it is not originated from Microsoft, but XP implements it. So do some network switches (Cisco). Routing control packets to the right tower along the flight path is, of course, no problem.

On CBS Bob Orr reporting from Washington, D.C. said about ten minutes ago that he was handed a report that said the WH and Bush Admin. are "thinking" about grounding all departing flights (nationwide?). Again, he said this was a "report" of them "thinking" about doing this. No confirmed report yet. Why would they ground planes if it seems to be a "mechanical" failure?
Also, ABC and Fox went to local programming at 11 am.

Granted, I hope it was an accident...and if it wasn't, that we come up with a damn good explanation.

LOL, I am sure Chelsea and Hillary will write a book about their experiences.
Engine at gas station is intact and did not burn.
Fire is still going full blast. People ran towards the houses to try to rescue people- saw one guy in civilian garb head right into some very hot areas- looked like he was running into a street in flames. Very courageous... hope he is OK and hope he wasn't looking for anyone in particular.
Investigators do say there was what seemed (appeared or sounded?) like an explosion on board. They say they are investigating whether it was mechanically related or saboutage as it is not clear at this time.
American airlines is going to hold a press conference.
They zoomed in on what might have been the other (burned) engine but the glimpse was too quick for me to be sure. The forward portion of the cowling appeared to be shredded, with torn portions angled outward.

I think I just heard Jennings say that it is a comfort that at least it was not a terrorist attack
Are you speaking of Peter Jennings, the Canadian TV show host?
