The Rockaways are basically a thin strip of land extending into water. Beach country. It's possible they were aiming for water.
It's also possible that there was another hijack situation in progress and there was nobody in the cockpit who COULD aim for water.
I look at today's date and I am just chilled. Wasn't the 12th a significant date for some reason?

Crash with smaller airplane Piloted by a peaceful Muslim?
To: Oldeconomybuyer
Tough to say what this is now. Could be a old fashioned airplane crash. Still, the type of plane is interesting. And, my paranoid self this morning was thinking that OBL didn't need nukes, he could just smuggle in some stingers and set them up on airport arrival and departure areas and bring down lots of planes. Lets see if any other planes go down.

What is the source of the info that this is a collision with a smaller plane?

WABC Radio is reporting that there was a small plane in the area and that the witnesses report that one engine was on fire or that the plane had actually lost an engine.
Remember the DC-10 in O'Hare about 20 years ago. It lost an engine and lost control because of the resulting wieght imbalance between the wings.

You're right it is a very populated area. Even moreso in the summer.
Breezy point - spent all my summers there as a kid.<P. Level 1 response - all hands needed.

"On approach...not the terrorist M.O....not maximum fuel for impact." At this point, if it is the work of terrorists, any killing of Americans would have an impact.

When I saw the location listed as Rockaway, I thought of firefighter Moran....

NY1 is reporting that the plane had just taken off, CNN reporting that it was inbound. NY1, bad as it sometimes is, is very good at reporting local emergencies, so I tend to trust them.

It's on the Today right now. They are showing a huge billowing smoke cloud by a body of water.

THis sounds crazy, but I'd been reliving my youth listening to my Ramones records this weekend. I slept fitfully last night, with a serious sinking feeling. The tune Rockaway beach kept playing in my dreams. At one point I dreamed of a town's horizon washed in blood. Woke me up.

It could very well be an accident. It would not be the first airliner that crashed short of landing. But whether accident or attack, what a horror! In a residential neigborhood ... and all those people.

Eyewitness on WABC 770 Radio now. Reports that plane looked like the nose was twisted and saw no flames as the plane went down. Large fireball on ground. Did not explode in the air. Report by a man called Issac.

For all of you unfamiliar with the geography, the Rockaway peninsula is really a barrier island to the Atlantic coast of Long Island. Two boroughs of New York City (Brooklyn and Queens) arer actually located on Long Island (but when New Yorkers refer to "Long Island" or "The Island" they are referring to Nassau and Suffolk counties).
The Rockaways are located very close to JFK Airport.
They are now reporting that the plane hit in Breezy Point, the western tip of the peninsula (closest to NY City). This area is totally residential, with (relatively) many NY cops and firemen.
