The Rockaways are basically a thin strip of land extending into water. Beach country. It's possible they were aiming for water.
It's also possible that there was another hijack situation in progress and there was nobody in the cockpit who COULD aim for water.
I look at today's date and I am just chilled. Wasn't the 12th a significant date for some reason?

Just fyi, one of my cow-orkers said last night was a PERFECT Crescent Moon with Venus and Mars. He thought to himself that it might be a portent of doom. He even mentioned it this morning before this crash thingie. We'll see.

Come to think of it, Jamaica Bay would be a good place to pull off an attack with a stinger or other portable anti-aircraft missile. Lots of reeds, lots of places to hide, shallow non-turbulent water.
