Pentagon says no notice of foul play to Dept of Defense- Norad received no distress calls or info of a change in course relayed from FAA. Aircraft went down right after takeoff.
There is a fighter cap as usual but fighters were not called to the plane. Fighters were alerted after the fact and one just flew over site- an F-15, probably to report back on what can be seen and to ward off other air traffic.
FBI says no warning or threats have been recieved.
12 buildings on fire... small buildings. Schools were closed for veteran's day.
ABC has had the Jackie Powers chick on for the past hour. Her panicky reports are good radio, but she sounds like a kook. She saw the plane just before it went into the ground. Aviation "expert" John Nance from Indiana then speculated that it could have been an "incendiary device." Great call John. Get Miss Cleo for more accurate results.
Earlier they played a interview tape of this guy (they just played it once, guess it didn't make good radio). This guy saw the whole event. He was looking at the plane from before the event began happened. He said he saw an engine fall off. Then after 15 seconds the plane tilted and flew into the ground (it was at this point that eyewitness Jackie Powers took notice of the plane).
I turned off CNN. No point in listening to people who don't know what's going on and are confused. (Which is a pretty normal discription of CNN.)
And full of fuel!!!

I work in an airline dispatch office and our maintenence personel and the dispatchers here are speculating on catastrophic engine failure taking the hydraulics with it.
So, the bomb would go off on the runway, and not in the air. Kill less people. It would still scare the you-know-what out of everyone. I think terrorists are going to do what they can when they can. Any kind of bomb is a possibility.

Probably depends on what it hit on the ground.
SAM leaves a very prominant stream of rocket booster smoke leading from launch point on ground to impact point on A/C.The big ones certainly do. However, I saw a TV story years ago where they filmed a Muj unit shooting down a Russian military jet with a Stinger. The TV report showed the whole thing from launch to impact. It didn't make all that much smoke or noise. And it didn't cause the Russian jet to explode all at once either. (Of course, we're talking about a civilian airliner here.)
