Australian charged after 'offer to spy for Iran' Israeli authorities have charged an Australian man who allegedly offered to spy for Iran.

According to the indictment issued by the Israeli attorney-general's office, Mark Idan, who holds Australian and Israeli citizenship, offered to sell intelligence after presenting himself to the Iranian Embassy in Cyprus in 1998 as an Israeli who had served in the country's armed forces.

Iranian officials reportedly told him they were not interested in what he had to offer.

Mr Idan is believed to have done his compulsory military service in Israel after obtaining citizenship in the 1980s when he married an Israeli.

If found guilty on the charge he could go to jail.

He is due to appear in court again later this week.
