Violent meteor storm heads for Earth

A violent meteor storm is edging closer to Earth.

Space Shuttle flights are being cancelled and astronauts in the International Space Station are bracing themselves.

It's set to be the most powerful meteor storm to hit in decades.

Some of the 600 communications satellites orbiting Earth are also at risk.

The meteor is travelling at 160,000mph and will pass close to Earth later this week.

Nasa has already taken steps to protect the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope.

And the three astronauts in the space station are set to make their final space walk until the storm has passed.

The cosmic fireworks will begin as the Earth begins to cut across the orbit of Comet Temple-Tuttle, and into the blizzard of meteors.

The shower known as the Leonids, is an annual event but this year Earth will cut across an especially dense part of it.

Some parts of the world will be able to see the spectacular light show in the sky.

Cooke and other experts agree that when the Leonids return later this month sky watchers in some parts of the world will see a display even better than the one in 1998. Indeed, says Cooke, "what's coming on Nov. 18th could be the biggest event since 1966 [when North Americans enjoyed a Leonid storm numbering 100,000 shooting stars per hour

Observers in North America, Hawaii, Australia and Asian countries along the Pacific Rim will be favored for the best views of the 2001 Leonids. Meteor rates in those places could climb as high as 8000 per hour -- not quite as intense as the 1966 storm, but more than enough to make a sky watcher's jaw drop.

Thanks for nailing down the year. I was 12 to 13 when I ventured out that morning on my paper route....it was a heck of a show for many a morning.

OK, the sky is falling. We're all going to die. The worse news: it's the Leonid Brezhnev meteor shower!

Just a guess, mind you, but the areas without cloud cover during the night, will probably be the ones with the best view.

Saw one a couple days ago. These meteors are nearly the fastest you will see. They leave long trails that fade almost immediately. Or maybe they are moving so fast there isn't any trail except for an after image in the eye. Like on a clear bright day you can see a pistol bullet flying through the air, but it looks like a pencil line.

Intae' the bunker! Tinfoil lined helmets on! Now, we wait for our impending doom (is it just me or does impending doom seem awful slow?).

Oh my! It'll be high noon in London the day of the Leonids.

Will we be able to see them if I use my welder's glass?

If it's cloudy, I guess they will be visible after they
break through the clouds. (TIC)

What are the chances of anything hitting the earth?  Could any of these be bolides?  These are reported to be small, but so are some bullets...and as a certain ex-somebody once said, "bullets kill people."

Here is another reference from that Book of Enoch site site above:
'And then in his anger the immortal God who dwells on high shall hurl from the sky a fiery bolt on the head of the unholy: and summer shall change to winter in that day.'
Because the seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere to the southern, that change could occur from a polar shift ...a reversal of poles, the earth reeling like a drunken man.

Isa 24:1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
...
Isa 24:20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

>Leonid meteor shower is due to hit on the morning of November 18th for North America.

Oh, incidentally, in Bible Numerics (which is NOT numerology), the number 18 stands for Judgment...or two times 9 which is finality.

Small I expect. Some believe that we took some pretty good hits when these 'tails' were young and the earth went through them. Most think we've (the Earth) already taken the big hits from previous (pre-history) passes.

Looking forward to it. If the weather is clear, I will be standing on top of a 14,000 ft peak watching. :)

I've already seen a few meteors, over the weekend. I can imagine some people might go over the edge after this . . .first the northern light show and now fireballs in the sky . . . . it doesn't take much . . . .

I've been working with spacecraft/satellites for more than 20 years. I have yet to see one hit by non man-made debris.

This of course does not mean it cannot happen. I think if it does, it is a rare occurrence at best.
