What IS "Southern heritage"?

It goes something like this, speech fascist.

It is the belief that the culture and traditions of the Southern region of the United States are admirable, redeeming, and edifying. They, in many ways, form the core of conservative thought: civility, individualism, traditional morality, and pride in one's homeland.

We are not, nor ever have we been consumed with and defined by "racism", if that term is taken to mean irrational hatred of our black neighbors. Slavery, though hardly a sin exclusive to us, is an institution of which we are deeply regretful and ashamed; it will forever be a blot on our past, as well as a convenient bludgeon for condescending cretins like yourself. We do not, however, put on idealist blinders and pretend that we are all the same; we are not, never have been, and are reminded of it every day.

But we will not roll up into a fetal position, be perpetually ashamed of ourselves to gain your good graces and acceptance, and be told to trash can the memory of a venerable, if imperfect, American institution like the Confederacy.

Does that enlighten you a bit?

Thanks for a wonderfully restrained and well-mannered response to "Illbay."
IF I had answered him, it would have been something more along the lines of
'P*ss on you and the mule you rode in on!'

But you saved me from having to do that.

I'm a Southerner, and I'm not a bit ashamed of slavery that existed in the past. Slavery was legal, and although the South fought to keep slavery legal, the REAL fight was over the North FORCING their will on the Southern states, which was a very valid reason for having a war. At the height of slavery, less than 5% of people in the South owned slaves, so that whole "slavery" thing has been blown way out of proportion. IMHO, all Southern states had the legal right to secede from the Union, and if the North would have let them do that peacefully, the war never would've happened. The war, which wasn't technically a "civil war," was in fact, the Norths fault. The BATTLE ended at Appomattox, but the war goes on, with the Northern States wanting more federal control, and more social programs, and the Southern States, continuing to fight for state RIGHTS, and for personal freedom and responsibility. The Confederate flag is a VERY proud symbol, and I fly it often. The Confederate flag shows us what true freedom really means, the freedom to think for onesself. :)
