More details on the ambush murder of Sheriff Erik Telen by Ramadan Abdur-Rauf Abdullah. Ramadan had been to the Baladullah camp but the residents would not give information to the investigating officers regarding the connection of Ramadan and Camp Baladullah. HMMMMMMM!

Fresno Bee, The (CA) August 23, 2001 Section: MAIN NEWS

Four other officers would brave gunfire, as many as 100 rounds of ammunition, to get Telen out of an isolated home.

Abdullah finally surrendered at 12:31 a.m, after a 5 1/2-hour standoff. When the gunman emerged, deputies and SWAT team members were stunned. The 130-pound Abdullah looked like a 16-year-old boy.

Sources inside the Sheriff's Department say the number of rounds fired and the way Abdullah lay flat on the ground awaiting Telen to round the corner may indicate firearm training.

In this mountainous area of eastern Fresno County where people are used to shooting rattlesnakes and hunting is a common hobby, it was not unusual that the home Abdullah broke into had a cache of guns. What was unusual is how well he knew how to use the weapons. What remains unanswered is why he did.

Sheriff's officials said they think they know why Abdullah, a New York native, was in the area, but they did not provide details Wednesday. A source familiar with the investigation said they believe Abdullah knew people in the area.

Telen rounded a corner. Abdullah was waiting and shot him immediately. Stalker returned fire and retreated, according to standard tactics and training. Once outside, Stalker realized Telen was still in the house. The most galvanizing words in law enforcement went out over the radio: "Officer down." (end of clip)

The article was rather lengthy . The above is the part that raises question about Baladullah and the connection to Ramadan . Investigators could not get information from the Baladullah residents. What did they have to hide and why is the investigation of the questionable camp activities appearing to be discontinued.

Where to go next?

Thanks for the info. I am certain at least some of the slain deputy's fellow officers will hold onto this case like pi bulls.

In the interim it might well be significant to find out who is ordering the investigation curtailed.

Shaking and gasping, the man accused of murdering a sheriff's deputy repeatedly interrupted a judge, sometimes with sexually explicit outbursts, Thursday in a Fresno County courtroom. "I want O.J. ... his attorney," 20-year-old Ramadan Abdur-Rauf Abdullah yelled, interrupting Judge Debra J. Kazanjian.

"You need to keep your mouth shut," Kazanjian retorted.

Moments later,

"You're going to have something else controlled if you're not quiet," Kazanjian responded.

Abdullah is accused of murdering deputy Erik Telen at a rural home in Dunlap on Aug. 21. The 26-year-old deputy had been investigating a break-in.

Abdullah's demeanor Thursday was in stark contrast to how he acted at his previous court hearing. On Oct. 25, Abdullah was declared mute by his attorney, who said his client had not communicated with anyone in weeks.

Thursday, Abdullah communicated plenty, although it was often nonsensical. The scheduled action was a preliminary hearing, but attorneys agreed to continue the matter until Jan. 24 so that several reports could be reviewed.

"I object, your honor," Abdullah interjected when he heard the plans.

"You're not going to interrupt me. Do you understand that?" Kazanjian said.

"Your honor, I have a question."

"You're not going to interrupt me."

"I don't want to continue," he finished.

Telen's family exited out of the back of the courtroom and did not talk with reporters. Prosecutor Dennis Peterson also did not comment.

Defense attorney Jim Lambe said Abdullah's outbursts are indicative of his mental instability.

"We hope to get to the bottom of it soon," he said, adding that a psychiatrist is scheduled to evaluate Abdullah before the next court date.

Lambe said evidence was unsealed Thursday that indicates Abdullah had mental problems before shooting and killing Telen.

In a June 29 resignation letter handed in before he quit a job as a telemarketer in New York, Lambe said, Abdullah wrote: "There are [two] many witches, warlocks and homosexuals working here."

Lambe said he has serious doubts about his client's competency to understand and aid in his own defense. Such an issue could prevent his trial until doctors declare him competent.
