Now that we have former Governor Tom Ridge at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security, what is the next step?
The newly minted Dept has almost no staff or officers, but yet has a broad cope and reach across much of the Federal bureacracy. Most of those in Director Ridge's balliwick inclued the INS, Border Patrol, Coast Guard and at least two dozen others. However if you know how govt loves to work, then you know that nobody protects their job like a government worker. The problem is obvious since 9/11 we still have political crisis as well as a security one.
Yet we have a golden opportunity to fix serveral problems in one fell swoop.
We need to consolidate several of these government agency under the auspices of the Dept of Homeland Security.
Just imagine in if we could merge the INS, Customs Dept, Border Patrol and Coast Guard under the DHS. Then we could modernize, reform and fully man our borders. If Constitutional issues preclude the use of our Military to guard a immediate borders (a title X issue from the doctrine of Posse Comitatus) we would not have to be left fully unprotected Moreover the DHS would work with the other nations of North America just like NORAD has successfully done for decades. now we would have a "one stopping" center to protect our nation from 21st century threats
Now i can hear all my good conservative friends complaining about all the new govt spending and new govt workers.... We can simply end the income tax and disband the IRS to pay for all this...
