New strain of HIV is resistant to main drug
By Steve Connor Science Editor
06 November 2001
A new type of Aids virus can quickly turn resistant to one of the most effective drugs used to treat the disease. Scientists discovered the new strain among 603 HIV-positive patients who were so recently infected they had not yet even been given drugs. Their findings suggest the much-feared increase in drug-resistant forms of HIV is beginning to take root with a strain that has an in-built capacity to resist treatment with AZT, the principal anti-Aids treatment.
Although drug-resistant strains of HIV were discovered in 1992 they were almost invariably found in patients having treatment with one or more anti-viral drugs. While drug resistance has been seen in HIV-infected patients before, it has seldom been seen in untreated patients.
The latest strain was evidently transmitted among people who have never been exposed to AZT, suggesting that drug resistance is spreading rapidly within HIV-positive people who may not even know they are infected.
The latest study, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found several genetic mutations in the new strain of HIV made the virus perfectly poised for further mutations that conferred full AZT-resistance. Dr Garcia-Lerma said doctors would test patients for this new strain and report its prevalence so the general rise in drug-resistance could be monitored.
If such strains become widespread, that will be a severe setback in Aids treatment.

Vietnam has 41,030 people who have tested positive for HIV, a health ministry official said Monday. As of the end of September, 6,138 people were known to have AIDS while another 3,372 had died from the disease since the first HIV case was detected in 1990. The official said 7,047 people were found to be HIV-positive in the first nine months of this year, while there were 941 new AIDS patients and 521 deaths from the disease during the period. About 60 percent of the confirmed HIV patients are drug users. The government spends about $4 million a year to fight AIDS. The money is being used to buy test kits, ensure safe blood transfusions and raise public awareness.

Intraveneous drug users and the gay community better wise up. Stop engaging in self-destructive behavior, falsely thinking that an AIDS cocktail will save you.

One percent of all the pregnant women in India's capital are HIV-positive, according to the Indian Academy of Pediatrics. It is feared that up to 30 percent of children born to these women will get infected with the virus. Due to the urgency of the situation, the academy organized a two-day National Conference on Pediatrics HIV/AIDS beginning Saturday. Representatives of the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the National AIDS Control Organization and UNAIDS will attend the conference, along with about 300 doctors from India and abroad.

This is a direct consequence of tolerating a large quantity of HIV in the population. More virus in circulation equals more oportunity for mutation. Perhaps HIV will eventually mutate into a hardier form that can survive airborne transmission. It could kill billions. US health policy on HIV is immoral. we need to use whatever measures to stop the spread of this virus. How many non-drug using /non-promiscuous people have died in the name of HIV tolerance?

clever response. Mind if I use it myself sometime?

What drug company could afford the research for new aids drugs now that it has become obvious that their property will be immediately seized, so that it can be made cheaply.

Let's get a few things straight (instead of homo!) HIV does NOT, I repeat NOT, cause AIDs, and AIDs is NOT, I repeat, NOT a sexually tranmitted disease.
A virus is a foreign protein. The test for HIV doesn't elucidate the retrovirus, it only detects a lingering antibody to the long since departed active virus.
Do what so many homosexuals do and get a grip on yourself. A virus doesn't know that you're a male or female, young or old, homo or straight. By now, every heterosexual in the world should be infected or dead!
Stop and think for a moment. How do you acquire an immune deficiency? How can one harmless retrovirus cause over forty different diseases? Why would any doctor give someone with an immune deficiency a DNA chain terminator, a drug so toxic it had been abandoned by BW?

How long is this pathetic and insidious fraud going to be perpetrated on humanity. HIV has always been AZT- resistant, in that any person that starts taking AZT, HIV positive or otherwise, immediately starts developing immuno-suppression and related diseases and eventually dies. This is because AZT systematically destroys human cells. The HIV virus has not been demonstrated to cause anything. Even the HIV tests only indicate the presence of antibodies which coorelate to numerous conditions unrelated to the presence of HIV (i.e. there's not even a test in existence that reliably indicates the presence of the virus, which has not been shown to be the cause of anything, anyway.)
