That would seem to be the least likely scenario.

While some of the people doing this kind of research are not of the highest character (Fauci, and Gallo, for example) the kind of larceny they are prone to is more along the line of 'Glory-hounding' rather than negating their life's work through selling out to some seedy character for what to them would be a paltry sum.
