"Donnie DiFrancesco is the President of the State Senate. Since NJ has no Lt. Governor, if there's a vacancy in the Governor's office, the President of the State Senate becomes the Acting Governor, while retaining his seat in the Legislature."
You mean the Repubs have control of the state senate but Schundler is polling that badly?

I believe that the Republicans have veto-proof supermajorities in both houses of the state Legislature.

That is because in NY and NJ you have a dying GOP machine that is filled with hacks and scumbags who are mirror images of the lifelong, live off the taxpayer Democrat politicians in those states, and who are proud of having absolutely no discernible beliefs about anything.
Schundler is an outsider, a grassroots conservative who shocked the party bosses. Herman Badillo was trying to do the same in the NYC mayoral primary (NYGOP hacks abhor primaries) and was basically railroaded as much as possible by the party.
