Thanks for the heads up on this. It has not gotten any press in my area....but it will now. This is definitely needed. Every weekend I have to re-educate my granddaughter. She knows coming to Grandmother's house means a history lesson and a discussion of current events...:)

The liberals continue to try and keep these symbols from our schools, and as a result, they groom kids that don't appreciate or care about the freedom that was earned through the blood of our nation's soldiers. Thank you for your work on this good cause.

I think we should have a club. Grandparents are the bridge between generations. We pass the oral history on to the next generation. I think parents are too busy being parents, all the daily stuff with children. Grandparents are the ones who can take the long view and long walks and talks and impart to the young ones what is important. My granddaughter is 9, her family founded our city in the 1700's and she was born in our state's bicentennial year. She can tell you more of the city's history than 99% of the adults I know. I am glad to hear other grandmothers are doing the same with their families. Keep up the good work.

The "Instruction relating to the flag; holidays" is DOA. I'm not sure why you'd even bother to include it. So we're going to force kids to recite a recent pledge written by a socialist, and requiring them to make religious affirmations? And you want kids in Georgia or Alabama to "make special provision for the observance in the public schools of Lincolon`s birthday?"

Setting aside my enduring hatred for government schools, the rest of this model legislation looks pretty good. It would be even better if you post a model curriculum.

I read your post before I responded the first time. Have you been to the Alliance for the Separation of School and State website? I like a quote from their FAQ:

"What's wrong with the common school concept?

We don't have a common pizza, a common magazine or a common church. They make no common sense. The way out of the "School Wars" is to drop the 1840s' notion of a "common school." Government has no business forcing kids from different backgrounds into a one-size-fits-all tablet of values. The Common School wasn't so bad for 100 years; they imparted the Protestant majority's values to mostly Protestant kids. Some groups escaped (e.g., Christian Reformed, Seventh Day Adventist, and Catholics); others were small and took their lumps (e.g., Jews, atheists, and Jehovah's Witnesses). The flaw of the common school only became clear to traditionalists when the tables were turned on them. Over the last 50 years, the modernists have won control and now they use schools to impart their idea of "The Good." But the traditionalists are not a tiny minority that can be abused with impunity. So you're worried about liberals and government education. Are you a liberal? I like the idea of teaching the founding documents in government schools, just so that it's clear that there should be no such thing as government schools, particularly federally funded government schools. But you want the same schools whose counselors refer pregnant teens to abortionists to teach your kid values? Leave me out.

What I want is some basic principles to be taught in schools, so that kids know what is really important. I am a product of a private religious education, and it is precisely for the lack of principles and values that my parents did not let me set foot in those schools. However, just because you don't want "Common" schools, doesn't mean it's going to happen. The reality is that there will always be public schools, and we should do what we can to correct these moral deficiencies. From your comments, I believe we have the same core values, but I don't understand your point.

Just for the sake of this proposal, it makes sense that any government schools should be required to teach the basis of the government(s). To not do so is kind of like being hired at a company that won't tell you how they were founded, or what the company guidelines are. Even if the company is screwed up or incompetent, it still just doesn't make any sense not to tell about the foundations of the company.

But the government has no business at all in instilling values. Period. You can't say, "It's the parents' responsibility to teach their kids values," but then say, "except when the majority of voters says that a government teacher should teach them values."

So, I'm all for government schools teaching the Constitution and other founding documents, assuming they're honest about it, which is perhaps unreasonable to assume. I'd like to see what the government schools teach about the 2nd Amendment now, for instance. But they have no business in teaching values or requiring religious pledges.
