TERRORISM MUST ALSO BE FOUGHT
DARE Website ^ | 11-2-2001 | Glenn Levant, President of DARE

The horrific and tragic events in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania committed by terrorists have left our nation and the world shaken, fearful, and saddened. From the ashes of this unparalleled destruction, however, our nation - the most diverse in the world - has risen with a patriotic and dedicated resolve unseen since Pearl Harbor.

As our President and his cabinet work around the clock with congressional leaders and the military to launch a comprehensive and decisive "war against terrorism," our nation and its citizens must also act to strike a deadly blow against the largest and most insidious source of money for international terrorists - drug-traffickers and organized crime.

It is well documented that Afghanistan is the source country for Southwest Asian heroin and hashish - the number one export in Afghanistan is Opium poppies which are converted into Southwest Asian heroin. And Afghanistan is only one of many such countries. Stated simply, drug money - hundreds of millions of dollars from protecting drug trafficking routes, airstrips, and laboratories - supports terrorists and ultimately the governments which harbor them.

Drug-financed terrorists are called Narco-terrorists for a reason. As criminals engaged in drug trade, arms-trafficking and money-laundering, this network of criminals are partners with terrorists. Together they murder men, women, and children, and undermine our freedoms as directly as the fanatics who turn hijacked airliners into flying bombs.

As our nation mourns the tragic loss of life and prepares for its long campaign against these inhuman animals, our leaders must obviously prepare for a war on many fronts....among them must be drug abuse, its trafficking, and organized crime. Federal, state, and local drug enforcement efforts and drug resistance education programs must not only continue, but must be expanded.

As a nation, we must recognize that those who buy and consume illicit drugs are ultimately supporting acts of terror and violence. Consequently, our strategic war plans and national resolve must also focus on a continued and broadened strategy to eliminate this major source of funds for terrorism.

Yes, and by that logic Hitler had a very effective treatment for Jews. (sarcasm mode off)
