Well John, I wondered about that. But this was WWII and before we got all into PTSD which woulda been a good excuse not to go. I think men in the service just went. He loved subs from what my mother told me and was pretty low key about it after. All I have is a paper clipping of him when he came home before he went back. It was interesting that the captain of the sub was a Louisiana boy as was my cousin. I heard about this as a kid and my sibs who are older remember listening to the radio all that day and nite waiting for news. I never even knew it was significant till much later. I have pics of him as a boy with my mom, apparently he was a wonderful guy. I don't know about genius. He was a good man however.
