We went a bit beyond that. Was on USS Wiltsie (DD 716) in the early 60s as OOD and were (thanks to a new Airdale Group Commander) passing through the same typhoon on the third run of an eventual seven. Every time we were in a following sea and fairly stable (just a little corkscrew rolling and pitching) we would get continuous calls from the Group Cdr on how we were riding. But when we changed course to ride in the troughs, not a peep. It was during one of these that we took the roll. Nothing more exhilerating than to get over to the end of it and hang there for what seems a few hours but is only seconds.

Never forget looking up from the bridge at the tops of the waves around us. Wedged myself between the wing bridge pelorus and bulkhead so I would stay with the living. I recently visited the JP Kennedy and wondered how I ever fit in there. Course that was 40 less pounds and 40 more years ago. Would not trade those years for anything.

Another military acronym and a part of at sea life that is instantly recognizable to any sailor - officer or enlisted -who ever did a sea tour is PCOD, pronounced pee-cod. Those who know what it means, I can see you smiling!

I was an officer and a gentleman by act of congress. I will leave the definition to others. It is not fit for mixed company and there might be some Army pukes lurking around who might be offended, once you explained the 'P' word to them.

That brought back memories of a two week cruise to Gitmo I was on in the 60s.

After four years in the USAF for some reason I joined the USNR.

Just before the cruise some old salt told me: "Jimmy, grab the top bunk as your first order of business."

I got the top of 5 bunks in a section of the USS Purdy which was older than I was at the time.

Good advice....the guy in number 4 puked all the way to San Juan on the three swabbies below him!

Army guy

One of the closest equivalents for an Army guy is painting rocks.
Or shining your boots before hiking through 20 miles of mud. When you get back you have to shine your boots again before you can hit the rack (sack).

We have an Army captain on loan to us for a year. I tease him about the Camping business and he gives me grief about the Marina business.

as a former submariner you also need to store all your food in the shower, and stack boxes every where on the floor so that you have to walk hunched over. And you need to store all garbage in the fridge.

My copy of DICNAVAB has expired since I retired. I tried to submit a request for an update but I couldn't find the right address in the SNDL. Somehow, I doubt if the definition of PCOD or WETSU would be listed there. ;-)

My copy of the DICNAVAB, 1982, (I have it right here.) lists PCOD as Permanent Change of Duty. That's about all that's safe to type.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I never would have guessed that the official definition was "Permanent Change of Duty".

Since I was neither an officer nor a gentleman, I was never privy to the refined definitions being circulated in the wardroom. We had a completely different interpretation down in the Chief's mess. ;-)

I will 'gar-ON-tee' you that our XO never would. Just be glad I never mentioned BOHICA. That was one of the XO's favorites.
