As a guy who grew up in a steel town, I could never quite bring myself to buy a rice burner. But I don't think they hurt or economy at all. In fact, they helped it. Without the pressure from Japanese imports, Detroit would still be pushing garbage products down our throats like they did in the 70s. The Japanese made them shape up.
