The Bolshevik persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church was carried out explicitly in the name of promoting atheism. They certainly out-killed all persecutions by Christian confessions in absolute numbers, though I think the 30-years war was bloodier in proportional terms.

Really? I thought that it was about promoting and strenghtening communism, which depended on absolute obedience to the state, so they couldn't have anyone swearing alliegance to any gods that would take prescendence over the state.
