Commander of Indian troops in Kashmir sends war warning to Pakistan

JAMMU, India (AP) The commander of Indian troops in Kashmir warned Wednesday that if pushed, New Delhi could choose military action against Pakistan's army and Islamic guerrillas.

In the most aggressive war signal in years by a military commander, Lt. Gen. R.K. Nanavatty said India "must remain prepared to exercise the military action," and that the capture of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir was "achievable." India and Pakistan, which conducted tit-for-tat nuclear tests in 1998, share the Himalayan region of Kashmir.

"The nuclearization of the subcontinent might have altered the situation, but despite that, the space exists for a limited conventional operation," Nanavatty said.

The military had refrained from such references to war even during the 1999 frontier fighting between Pakistan and India that killed hundreds of soldiers.

When asked about the threat that India is in a position to seize Pakistan's northern areas and its part of Kashmir, Gen. Rashid Quereshi, spokesman of Pakistan's military government, said it is not worthy of comment. "They are totally mistaken," he said.

Tensions between the two countries have increased sharply since an Oct. 1 car bombing killed 40 people at the Kashmir state legislature. A group that operates openly in Pakistan claimed responsibility, then denied it weeks later.

Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee wrote President Bush after the bombing, saying Pakistan needed to understand that India's patience is limited.

Nanavatty, who commands the more than half a million soldiers in Jammu-Kashmir, was speaking at a seminar in the state's winter capital of Jammu.

P.K. Bandopadhyay, spokesman for India's Defense Ministry, said the general's assessment was "theoretically correct."

"On the ground we are maintaining strict vigil and restraint. In case any action beyond this is required, it will need the will of the nation and a decision by much higher authorities," he said.

India is fighting a 12-year insurgency by Islamic guerrillas in Jammu-Kashmir, a violent campaign that has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The militants want independence, or merger with Pakistan, for the only mostly Muslim region in Hindu majority India.

The two countries have fought two wars over their rival claims to the territory, and a third over Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan.

New Delhi says thousands of Islamic guerrillas are armed, trained and funded by Pakistan. Pakistan says its support for the guerrillas, whom it calls "freedom fighters," is only ideological.

Two-thirds of Kashmir is with India and the rest is controlled by Pakistan, but both sides claim it in its entirety.

" Pakistan says its support for the guerrillas, whom it calls "freedom fighters," is only ideological. "

BS. Even if your support is only "ideological" and not material, it doesn't make it right. If your support for the Aryan Nation is only ideological and you don't send money are you in the right or the wrong? If you supported the "Final Solution" only in spirit but not in deed, does that make the extermination camps more palatable? Islamic fundamentalism is like the head of the Hydra. I am disgusted at the tolerance of its existence yet once again.

Why dont we tell the Indians to get on with it? There is 1 billion of em, 900 million of whom hate muslems. India from the east, Israel from the west, russia from the north and the US and british fleets from the south. The Europeans can do what pleases them with north africa. If there was no islamic world how could we offend them?

Opps i forgot, arm Australia and New Zealand and let them rid themselves of those pesky Indonesians to the north and offer China Mayalaysia to stop them feeling left out.

There we go problem solved.....

There have already been six wars I think between India/Pak. Pakistan wasn't satisfied when the UN in '47 took away the land from India, it also wanted Kashmir. India said enough is enough. Live with what you got. Nope. War after war.

It's almost an axiom, wherever you find Islam, war is soon to follow. Religion of peace on their terms.

This has been done in the past for example when the Spanish and Portuguese divided up the world or when the Prussians, Austrians and Russians divied up Poland. Actually, probably a very sensible proposal.

So the world heats up & the threats began to fly. This thing seems to be escalating, our coalition is falling apart & some are fixing to fight. One more reason not to worry about Ramadan & all the P.C. Bull$hit! We need to do what has to be done & that means winning this war no matter what the Politcal costs. Besides our so called allies seem to want us dead as much as Bin Laden, just watch T.V. they say it every night.

That's not quite the word I'd use.

Sounds good, but we should at least make it look like we're concerned.

Agreed and, despite attempts of other Muslims to cover it, it is part of their creed. You are one of them or you are the enemy, just as Bush said about us. Big difference though, they are not hamstrung by political correctness and other niceties.

(For some reason when I try to insert italics in more than one place in these replies the ones after the first don't seem to take. Pretend this paragraph is in italics.)Tensions between the two countries have increased sharply since an Oct. 1 car bombing killed 40 people at the Kashmir state legislature. A group that operates openly in Pakistan claimed responsibility, then denied it weeks later.

This is a prime example. They are trying to take over Pakistan so they instigate a war between India and Pakistan in the north and then try to take over Islamabad as the military is preoccupied with India.

I'm in Bush's corner but he needs to take the gloves off & give these Bastards the @ss whipping they deserve. The Muslims of the World & the Arabs in particular are laughing at us & planning to hurt us severely. This must not happen, we need to cripple them first.

Somehow people accuse a person of bias just for pointing out the open and undisputed facts. Indonesia is mostly Muslim and they are fighting there from Island to island with some actually practicing canabalism, eating their enemy's liver. Also beheadings. The Phillipines. The Muslim minority there are kidnapping innocents and beheading them. Pakistan and Afghanistan. Iraq. Yemen roaming Islamic gangs capture foreigners and ransom them. The north and south are always in tension. Somalia is one continual battle. Chechnya is a Muslims problem. Sudan Muslims enslave and slaughter black Christians. Nigerian Muslims oppress and war with Christians. Egytpians Muslims prey on Copts. Algerian Muslims slaughter 100,000 fellow Muslims for being insufficiently Muslim. Mauritanian Muslims enslave blacks. I probably left off a bunch but I am sure the point is obvious.
