We have not seen such a serious threat since the Cuban missile crisis (quoted)
Fox News | 10/31/2001 | Fox News

Posted on 10/30/2001 10:59:14 PM PST by Don Joe

Fox News broke for a bulletin a few minutes ago. The announcer said that new information had just been received from the government, saying that the current emergency is very serious. They (the gov't) said that we have not seen such a serious threat since the Cuban missile crisis. They said that the most critical period would be within the next 72 hours.

Latest FNC blurb had to do with Nuclear Power Plants being on "Highest Alert" and a statement about terrorists trained to storm and 'melt down' (I think that was the phrase,, was half asleep) these plants. Also included a comment about the next 72 hrs being the most critical.

http://www.mtco.com/~ether/news-portal.html might not be a bad site, I am going to check it out. Funny, just tonight before my kids went out for Trick or Treat, I made them take potassium iodide. They balked, and I said "TAKE IT!"

In another thread Iraq's Saddam Hussein Threatens the West, an open letter from Saddam is posted. Lengthy. Something didn't sound right to me...

snip

On the basis of this realistic image, the entire world needs to be saved from the deep abyss it might be pushed into by the US, and the likes of the US, whether they are states, individuals, or organizations. In fact, now that we know the limits of how American rulers conduct themselves in crisis, the US itself needs to be saved by the world while it is saving itself. Otherwise, the world will be pulled down by the weight of the US while falling down to the bottom of a deep pit from which it will not be able to come out until that pit is filled with blood and tragedies, not to mention those who will suffocate because they cannot swim.

end snip

The bold portion seems to not fit the text previous to it. Being at a higher state of alert again, and this odd comment about suffocating because they cannot swim... are there any dams near heavily populated areas? Or some other means of mass flooding/drowning possible?

WRT "suffocate", do you remember that intercepted call between two terrs in, hmm, Italy? It was maybe 2 weeks ago, the news services translated what they had from the transcript, I think Fox got it slipped to them first.

Anyway, they were discussing some kind of new poison that could be distributed in cans of tomatoes. They said something about it suffocating people when they open the can, and then said something about "it all works by the pressure" or something like that. They gave it a weird name I'd never heard before. I did a buncha searches on that name using a couple of different spellings, and couldn't find anything on it beyond someone on Usenet asking what it was.

There are many dams above populated areas that if breached could result in calamitous damage.

I heard someone on FNC a few days ago talking about how people shouldn't buy gas masks because you can fall asleep and suffocate..... anyone got any numbers on how many suffocated in Israel during Desert Storm??? I found the comment odd... and wondered if it were meant to get people to not purchase masks simply because so many manufacturer's have said that they are on back order... imagine calling around and finding out that so many have been bought recently and now you have to wait months??? Would make you wonder wouldn't it?

The 'swim' part is weird, I still think water some how.

I remember that report... and like you, I tried to find more on it too. Nothing. Probably a slang word for something else.

But, a can of tomatoes? Ok... to get it into something canned and likely to be opened. Do they have or are they going to take over a canning facility? Maybe beer? Psssst... nobody notices and just figures you had too much to drink. (j/k)

I think it's a metaphor, only because he keeps referring to an "abyss"

Russian nuclear weapons, like American ones, have coded interlocks that prevent their detonation by a crazed individual within the Russian military itself, much less anyone who might steal one

BUT, anyone who manages to spirit away such a bomb would presumably be able to partially dismantle it and hack into the code system at leisure... the bomb code is only meant to prevent the bomb being exploded while it remains in situ.

Wasn't it cyanide they were referring to? Some type of cyanide gas. Man I sure miss the archives. I will look and see if that isn't one I saved somewhere.

Several systems referred to as "Locks and Dams", but the reality is they are a Lock system to raise and lower water levels to move barges up and down the Mississippi. No 'real' dams on the Mississippi,, as in Hover Dam.

"If there are people who would do us harm, we have to assume those people are probably trained to do things without a specific order," said Sen. Richard Shelby, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

This is true, however they may need to coordinate a la 9/11. Hopefully this will be sniffed out....

A couple or so weeks back there was a report of a foiled Italian plot to do something similar to this involving poison gas and tomato cans.

It would require a bit of engineering to do this to a food can and not be obvious (bulging ends, innards which don't feel or sound like tomatoes when sealed can is shaken). Let alone planting these in supermarkets with nobody noticing. Sounds rather impractical as a direct attack, though I could see trying to use a shipment of "food cans" to transport something really nasty.
