check out this link for everything you wanted to know about KI but were afraid to ask. We bought the granules to mix with water, cheaper than the tablets, but the tablets are more convenient (and supposedly taste better!). The KI fills the thyroid so that when the radioactive fallout approaches, the thyroid will be too saturated to absorb much. Tests amongst Russian schoolchildren immediately after Chernobyl showed that those given KI had no health problems, unlike counterparts who were unable to receive the medication (radiation sickness, cancers later in life, etc.). I got mine real cheap and fast from anbex.com; they're distro is fda approved for civil defense. hope that helps...
