Breaking: Worker at Manhattan Hospital Probable Inhalation Anthrax Case

Chanel 5, Fox News in New York City interrupted programming as Mayor Giuliani announced that a 61 year old woman hospital worker who was admitted to the hospital late Saturday with serious respatory symptoms has now been diagnosed as having a bacillus infection of the lungs consistent with anthrax. Results of further tests are awaited. She is listed as being in serious condition. Her work area adjoins the hospital mail room and 25 other workers have been put on appropriate drug treatment.

I saw it on Fox, but it might have been on both. The hospital was the Manhattan Eye, Nose and Throat Hospital on E. 64th Street.

It's fading in and out here in Northern VA, but they are interviewing a Dr. Miller who reluctantly said that the woman's inhalational anthrax is quite far along. He is doubtful of her chances.

Another case of Inhalation Anthrax has been confirmed today by the CDC and NYC Health Dept as well as two more skin cases. This brings the total number since the 9-11 attacks to 494 confirmed and 2,081 suspected nation wide.

When we finally realize our leaders aren't going to say it and we're tired of being strip searched before boarding a plane, and we realize a national ID doesn't solve the problem of enemies on our soil killing us. They did a PCR (poly-something chain reaction) and identified bacteria shaped like anthrax. The PCR, aka the Gene Machine, reproduces copies off genetic material.

Although the bacteria look like anthrax, they are doing tests that more specifically test for anthrax.

That would be polymerase. It's an enzyme which breaks nucleic acids into snippets. The basics behind the assay is to locate and ID lots of snippets which resemble snippets of a known source, and then you can with a high probability, claim to have identified something.

They are attacking hospitals. The mail rooms at the main Walter Reed Army Hospital in D.C. and its annex in Silver Spring tested positive for anthrax the end of last week. There is talk of vaccinating CDC workers for anthrax.
