Vandals burn Jewish school in southern France

MARSEILLE, France (October 29, 2001 09:58 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - Vandals burned down part of a Jewish elementary school in southern France and left behind spray-painted messages including "Death to the Jews" and "bin Laden will conquer," police said Monday.
Two trailers used as classrooms at the Pardes elementary school in Marseille were destroyed Sunday before firefighters brought the flames under control.
Police Chief Yves Dassonville said the arson attack was "an isolated act by young hoodlums, but it must still be taken seriously."
Security measures were heightened at many schools throughout France, including the Pardes school, after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. Osama bin Laden is the prime suspect in those attacks.
A wave of anti-Semitic violence broke out in France last fall after Israeli-Palestinian fighting escalated in the Middle East. In most cases, incendiary devices were lobbed at synagogues.

One suspect has been detained by police
A French railway employee has gone on the rampage in the city of Tours, killing up to four people and injuring about seven others.
An eyewitness told BBC News Online she saw the man, wearing a hood, open fire at random on passers-by in the city centre.
Doubt it will get equivalent coverage by the media.
