Need Help with Windows XP Installation

My copy of Win XP arrived today but when I tried to upgrade from ME, I got a fatal error message -- 3E6h, if anyone knows what that means. When I called MS tech support, I was told there would be a very long wait for assistance so I thought I'd see if anyone here could help...

Here's the situation -- since I can't upgrade, I thought I'd just do a clean install, so I clicked on that option but when I got to the partition screen, I clicked to install XP on C: drive (which is where ME is installed) and got a warning screen about having multiple OSs on one partition. I assumed that XP would just replace ME, but it seems that may not be the case.

I sure don't want to end up with a computer that doesn't work at all, so what should I do? Just go ahead and install XP over the top of the current installation on the current partition or something else.

Thanks in advance and nice to have someplace to go for help other than MS... :)

I have XP but am reluctant to install. Someone told me that Roadrunner S/W is incompatible with XP. Anyone know for sure?

Can someone tell me what Roadrunner Software is? I have Roadrunner and all I ever did was configure a network card, mail server and set the homepage.

Uh, ummm, I'm running Roadrunner as I speak, and have for 5 years, but I never installed the RR software. Suspect it is just a different locally based home page or cover page like AOL and others use. Whtever it is, you don't need it.

Not true. At least the RR service is not incompatible. Running RR here on both Win2000 and XP machines.

I spoke directly to RR tech support and they confirmed that they do not support XP. "Some of our customers are running XP with no problems; however others have reported problems. We are in beta right now. XP will not be formally supported by RR until 11/30/01."

I have no idea what they are talking about with "support". I've used RR for 5 years and never needed their "support". The point it that it WORKS FINE with XP, 2000, ME, 98, 95, Red Hat Linux, Mandrake Linux, and everything else I've tried. What else is there to need to know?
