It sounds to me like this guy was some sort of Democratic Party activist.

The reason I don't think that is he had to ask them what they were doing there. A democrat activist would certainly know by now what a conservative anti-protest might look like. I think this guy is here observing. Maybe some kind of spy and in light of the report from today, he knows things.

The question could have been rhetorical, asked in effort to point out what he thought was the futility of their support of the war because by Monday the polls were going to change in his favor.
