I knew I shouldn't have posted, because I really don't know what I'm talking about (and am willing to admit it, unlike some of the other people on this thread - not you!). I have read that XP takes your private info, what software is installed and your web surfing habits and reports that back to Redmond. I can't provide a direct link to an authoritative source, I just recall seeing it in a few places and have been told that by some anti-Microsoft types. I do not know that for a fact as I am not "into" this stuff.
Convince me I'm wrong.

I dont believe you are wrong . What I would do is hire a FReeper to disable what I did not like , or buy something else . CC and hundreds of others here swear by mac 's . We as informed , empowered consumers hold the key . I'll read that mail from your buddy later tonight . Always looking to learn , Ben

I do not know that for a fact as I am not "into" this stuff. Convince me I'm wrong. Anyone can claim that Apollo 11 was all staged on a movie set, and then ask everyone to prove his allegation wrong. Privacy concerns are always valid when dealing with businesses or government, as are the concerns of business and government with fraud, theft, and terroristic sabotage.

"Convince me I'm wrong." You come up with a harebrained urban legend, and then ask people to convince you that you're wrong?
Go ahead, believe anything you want.
