How many pieces of legislation that authorized additional police powers with a sunset clause that actually did sunset can you name? It's a great tool for slipping past opposition, but I can't think of a single one that has failed to be reauthorized when the sunset provision struck.

The "assault weapons" ban is supposed to sunset soon. What are the chances of that happening? We can't have those nutty freedom-loving right-wingers putting dreaded bayonets on their evil black rifles.

"I can't think of a single one."Actually, I can. The ESA (Enviromental Species Act) sunset, I think in 1994. In any event, it has not been re-authorized and yet this very act is being enforced against the Klamath farmers today.
So, even if the patriot act sunsets, and in reality very few of the provisions do, the govt will just go right on enforcing them.

I will look for it later Jolly but the sunset is NOT for investigation that are started.
