PACIFIC JUSTICE INSTITUTE PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release October 25, 2001 Contact: Attorney Brad Dacus (916) 857-6900 State Union Caves in to Pacific Justice Institute Demands La Mesa, CA - An employee of the State of California contacted the Pacific Justice Institute after consistently being denied his request to have his union dues redirected to a charity. The employee had provided the California State Employees Association with notice of his request several times over the past few years, but to no avail. The employee had firm religious convictions against supporting the CSEA due to his moral and Christian beliefs.
Upon receiving the employees phone call, one of the Pacific Justice Institute's affiliate attorneys sent a demand letter to the CSEA requesting immediate accommodation pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The union immediately caved in and promised to redirect his union dues according to his request to the charity of his choice.
"If more union members were aware of our services, they would not have to be frustrated so long by having their religious convictions ignored by their labor union," said Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute. Over the last four years, the Pacific Justice Institute has assisted many union workers wishing to have their union dues go to a charity based on religious objection.
The Pacific Justice Institute is a non-profit 501(c)(3) legal defense organization specializing in the defense of religious freedom, parental rights, and other civil liberties.
