VANITY: Where's Usama? North African gossip and lies

Hallo! A favourite game in northern Africa these days is to speculate on Usama bin Laden's hiding place - a sort of pan-Islamic Where's Waldo.

I imagine some people believe that bin Laden is still in Afghanistan. But folks in Chad have been heard to say he is in the Sudan again. The northern Sudanese point the finger in a different direction and talk about him being in Saudi Arabia. There's a Saudi Arabian in Tunisia who believes bin Laden is among the Uyghurs in China. And hold on to your hats (or your burqas) there are "true believers" who believe Usama bin Laden is the Mahdi and can be anywhere he wants to be enshallah.

The bottom line is that everyone wants to be sure the United States is looking at some country other than their own. And since the United States and the "English" nations are fixated on Afghanistan, let's all join the chorus, "Usama is in a cave in Afghanistan."

So really, where do you think Usama bin Laden is these days?

TOPICS: Foreign Affairs; Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS:
I would pick Tombouctou (Timbuktu) -- tremendous Islamic significance and almost impossible to reach. Or somewhere among the Tuareg in Algeria or Libya. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see him turn up in a blue Tuareg turban and veil.

God bless America,

Actually, those are three of the least likely places he would be.

As for Mali, see this BBC story

Police in Mali have arrested a group of about 20 Pakistani citizens following a meeting called to express solidarity for Osama Bin Laden and the people of Afghanistan. Bin Laden is the chief suspect of the 11 September bombings in the United States. Government sources say the arrests follow a meeting last week between US officials and Malian security forces, in which the Americans expressed concerns about the activities of the Pakistanis in Mali.

I think Algeria has been cooperating from the beginning, they have their own fundie problem. Gaddafi in Libya has been supportive in his own way, and supports, amazingly, American retaliation.

Didn't Nostradamus predict that the third Antichrist will be a Muslim and will wear a blue turban?

Nobody knows, and nobody is talking. We don't have many snitches in the Islamic world.
