Yes, Sodium pentathol can be given in excess of truth serum levels -- at that point it is referred to as general anesthesia.

I didn't know sodium pentathol was truth serum! I know they use it to put dogs to sleep and in surgery. That's good then if it was, he might have told some truth before he od'd and his compatriots won't ever know if he did or didn't.

I kind of like that idea...I use sodium pentathol every day to put my patients to sleep. But unlike the vets, I try to wake them back up!!!!

For the record, sodium pentathol is a barbiturate that has historically been used as "truth serum". When titrated in the proper doses, it sedates the patient sufficiently that he is unable to formulate lies (ie -- it makes you sleepy enough that you are not awake enough to confabulate). BUT it is a very narrow therapuetic window, and too much puts a patient off to sleep.

This is exactly what happened, IMHO. Perhaps after assuring themselves that he did not have any real info, they did him in in order to show the headline to someone who does possess useful intelligence.

Still wouldn't be as effective as torture, though.

Maybe they should put a bunch of terrorists together in a cell and dope them all up on sodium pentathol and listen to them talk. If some OD now and then, it's not a big loss because they probably all know the same things and there's plenty more out there.

Better yet, knock them out, have a Hollywood make-up artist create a latex pigface on the suspect and when he awakes have him queried by the other pigs and gradually expose him to a wall mirror.
