Pentagon Says Taliban May Poison Food Aid

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has information the Taliban may intend to poison food sent through overseas humanitarian aid to Afghan civilians and then blame it on America, a Pentagon (news - web sites) official said on Wednesday.

``We would never poison any food stuffs. We are humane people, we want to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need,'' said Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem, deputy director for operations of the military's Joint Staff.

``It's just beyond our comprehension that we would consider poisoning a food source,'' he told reporters. ``But we have obtained information ... that the Taliban might poison the food and try to blame the United States,'' Stufflebeem said.

The United States is providing food to Afghan civilians through air drops and other means.

The Russians have extensive experience with how these Muslim fighters booby trap, poison, and otherwise alter humanitarian efforts. Surely you know the reason for so many one-handed Afgani adolecents/young adults was the inseriton of triggering devices and plastique/black powder into TOYS of Soviet manufacture by the beloved Mujahadeen.
