Thanks for posting this excellent article, Luis. The American Spectator was a great magazine. "Why couldn't Tyrrell see that the project-which involved nonjournalists and a private detective funded by a third party-was an extraordinarily dangerous proposition for any journalistic enterprise? Perhaps because Tyrrell never saw the Spectator solely as a journalistic enterprise. Since the early days in Bloomington, Tyrrell had envisioned The Alternative as an adjunct to a political movement." I think this was the Achilles heel of their downfall.

The death of the Spectator isn't particularly surprising, although it is a loss. For some odd reason, the magazine just seemed to have lost its soul in recent years. Maybe the vitriol it expended on Bill Clinton splashed back on it. Maybe the loss of Bill Clinton dampened a dwindling fire. But it was only a shadow of its former self, and like a weary old pet, it's sometimes best to let it go.
