With respect to Dick Scaife, I have known him for thirty years, and always liked and admired him. I have never known him to demand anything from the Specttor, or any other entity for that matter. The fact that he was public enemy number one during the Clinton years says more about the Clintons than it does about Dick Scaife. Great presidents have most always had larger than life enemies. Clinton, not having an international crisis, had to invent small conflicts and domestic enemies. His administration made the Nixon Administration pale by comparison.
While we speak of Nixon and Dick Scaife in the same breath, let me share this bit of information for those who do not know about it. When Nixon ran for re-election in 72, Dick Scaife was the second largest contributor, behind W. Clement Stone, to his campaign. When it became clear that Nixon was breaking the law over Watergate, Scaife demanded his resignation in a front page editorial in the Tribune Review. I suppose it could be concluded that Dick Scife did not like law breakers as president, no matter their party affiliation.
