Doesn't Linux now own a bigger share than Apple (which hovers around 5%)? Last I saw, Microsoft owned about 87% of the market. Apple's share is a spit in the ocean.
No problem Lizzy W, the AirPort base station is actually in the spare bedroom your new room.
Apple currently has around 5% market share in personal computers. This means that out of one hundred computer users, five of them use Macs. While that may not sound like a lot, it is actually higher than both BMWs and Mercedes-Benzs share of the automotive market. And it equals 25 million customers around the world using Macs.
Wasn't this the same argument used by the Buchananites and Libertarians? ;-)
I'm not dumping my Mac and I'm not dumping the Beemer. Neener, neener. CC :)
Chris Crawford, the creator, has a website. I should track it down and ask if he's going to re-release it. Now that you mention it, it does seem like the perfect game for the present world...
(A title I didn't include but should have, Chipwits, one of my all time favorites, seems about to be re-released...)
Mark W.
Well, I'll use the superior Win XP and continue to drive Ammurrican......
Just bought a dual-800Mhz Apple G4 w/OS X. Great for graphics.
But the box I use over them all? Linux (Redhat 7.1 with the KDE desktop).
And the Penguin in the sky said, "Let there be Linux."
And the Penguin in the sky saw Linux, and it was GOOD.
Tee hee. CC :)
The significant thing here is not that MS is aping Mac as the problems MS is building into using their software.
I am just waiting for someone who innovates the use of non-XP MS software long enough to migrate to another OS, not Apple and certainly not MS
But Gates didn't invest in Apple to make money on the stock. He's much better served sticking with his own. As far as an investment goes, at this point, Apple is a sucker bet. Each year, they become more and more marginalized, and while the Titanium Powerbook has done well, it is off-set by the G4 Cube disaster.
No, Gates invested in Apple to insure that his investment in Office for the mac didn't suddenly go tits-up, and also to gain leverage with Apple's management. There was also the PR aspect, which was huge.
The mac's dirty little secret... the top software developer for them is Microsoft. If history is any indication, then it is only a matter of time for Apple.
BTW, if you read my post, you'd see I use both. I have a G4 that I use for Media100 and AfterEffects, and I stated that it is superior for graphics processing and manipulation. But on all other counts, Windows wins hands down. I'm not anti-mac, just a realist.
Bingo.
FINALLY we agree on something. If the anti-trust weenies hadn't been breathing down his neck, he prolly would NOT have done it. If he would have converted the shares when he was first able to, he would have turned a tidy profit though, before the tech bubble burst.
If I am not mistaken Office 2001 for the Mac was written by them separately than their windoze version, instead of merely porting over the codebase from the windoze side. It has received RAVE reviews, but I also think the macro language is the same, so now we have to worry about all those macro-based virii. I still use Appleworks though. If I need anything more than that, I reach for PageMaker.
I am not so anti-PC as I have let on here, but I won't stand by and let people bad mouth the Mac OS because I KNOW it rocks. NOTHING is easier than web development under PHP, using BBEdit on the Mac, and using NetAtalk under Linux for the file sharing daemon.
Even for ASP development for use under IIS, I still use BBEdit, and Services for Macintosh on NT. Phooey on Visual Interdev. I DO like Visual studio though. But I like Delphi a little better.
If I could only choose ONE OS to use from now on, it would be a hard call between RH Linux, and OS X. If OS X ever becomes available for Intel hardware, then I would be in hog heaven.
I am a PC user, have been since DAY ONE.
I have NEVER used a Mac, only toyed with them maye 3 or 4 times in my life for a grand total of less tha a half-hour each time.
BUT- although I could see it was superior (and I have a BS in Computer science AND another one in Physics) I could never afford one back then. Why? Because when PC's were selling for $2500, Macs were selling for $3500.
and the Mac people watched for 15 years as Microsoft took over the market, and apparently could never once find someone buisness savvy enought to realize that if they sold at the same price (or cheaper) the people would choose the better system (Mac).
The Mac OS is and always has been a superior operating system, but I work on and program Microsft machines because that is where 90% of the market is.
