I don't think Bush went to China under any illusions that they are our friends. If we confined international dialogue to total friends only, we'd be speaking only with...only with....Gosh, with whom would we HAVE international relations? Australia, maybe, is safe enough...but then, we haven't had a problem on the U.S.-Australian border in quite a few weeks.

To see Bush's trip to China in a positive light, I think before major military moves of this scope, heads of state meet one-on-one to assure each other of their intentions. Thus, Bush-Soviets; Bush-Britain; Bush-China; Bush-Italy; Bush-Germany, etc. He's very well-travelled lately. Hope this implies massive retaliation.
