Actually, I try to not call Easter by that name because of its connection to the goddess Estarte. I have heartburn over the commercialization of both Christmas and the Resurrection day celebrations. Yet, both of those holidays do not, as a part of their CURRENT celebration, include ritual worship of Satan, dark rituals, and murder. Halloween is NOT an innocent holiday - I don't care how many young kids participate in it.

Also, for people preaching a message of "tolerance in the name of a good time", you all seem rather intolerant. For example, in this thread, people and this article that/who disagree with Halloween have been called "Religious Freaks" (By yourself), people who have too much time on their hands, pathetically foolish, silly,tiresome,stupid, fanatics, and have otherwise ridiculed and verbally abused. Maybe you all better evaluate just how HOLY this day truly is in your sight that you would defend it with such vigor. Would you do the same for Resurrection day? Christmas?

Is it me, or, does a lot of the anti-religion invective written here mirror exactly what is taught by left-wing, Marxist professors in their hate for religion?

I swear, the lines of demarcation become more blurred by the day.

Not only that, but it mirrors Liberals who criticize the supposed "intolerance" of the right while their own intolerance far outweighs any alledged abuse by a conservative.

For example. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson's unfortunate & illtimed comments regarding 911. I believed their comments were a bit presumptive on God's role in the situation, and I thought their timing sank. But it was only the anti-religious set that called them (right here on Free Republic) "America's Taliban."

How true. I don't expect that non-Christians will care one wit about what some Christians have to say about Halloween and Harry Potter. I'm constantly amazed, however, at the belittling by other Christians. Me thinks they protest too much.

Halloween is more fun than Valentine's Day. Valentines Day is another Hallmark holiday designed to separate you from your cash.

Falwell and Robertson may make nice evangelists (although I have my own concerns with Robertson's dealings in Africa), but they make lousy politicians.

But you're right. I read those types of comments right here on FR, the cyber-bastion of the Right. At times with the anti-religious zealots here, there is no difference between what they say, and what you may find at DU.com.

I know this thread is about Halloween, but, it makes one wonder about the atheistic among the Right who supposedly hold dear this nation's founding documents. I wonder where they weigh in on The Declaration of Independence, to wit, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their CREATOR with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. . .

We know that these "unalienable Rights" found further definition in our original Bill of Rights, which everyone holds dear. If these founding documents are to be revered, how do they square their anti-religious beliefs with the fact that these self-same documents specifically state that we have our rights not by man but by God?

Or were the founders wrong? If so, everything else is up in the air.

I agree. There is nothing wrong with Halloween as long as it's safe and friendly. Most of the kids dress up as a non-evil entity anyway. And the adults get to act in the fun too.

oh puLLEEZE!! no one said harry potter rivaled c.s.lewis in ANY WAY, particularly in terms of quality! this is part of the problem...you PEOPLE extrapolate this stuff to the Nth degree!

as far as lewis goes... he brings back merlin in one book and talks about magic before the dawn of time. do you decry that? and certainly the works of Christ involved MAGIC....

as far ast the interest in wiccan beliefs, etc., i'm SORRY but i think that happens anyway. people who are profoundly influenced by that would have been anyway.

i applaud your monitoring of your own family unit. i,however, have little need for censorship in my home, since my children, who are strong-minded and wise, manifest a profound love of the Creator and His creations.

What are you? A leftwinger? No sane person on the right uses the word, "censorship", in regards to the decisions parents routinely make for their children.

My husband and I will continue to make decisions about what our children read based on what we think is pleasing to God, and without regard to the liberal establishment's use of the word, "censor". Thanks very much.

And, frankly, I'm very much at ease with your your leadership of your own family. You've shared your point of view. Now, why are you so angry? :)

In my opinion it all depends on whether you are Christian or not. No bible believing Christian should celebrate any pagan festival.
OTOH if you are not Christian you probably don't care.

Since it's been reported widely on the news that children are choosing fireman and policeman outfits for halloween attire this year.. I can certainly see the EVIL in little children getting a chance to fantasize about being a hero for a day... Paleeeeeez
