Shingles is a skin eruption caused by the same virus, Herpes Zoster, that causes chicken pox and cold sores. In some cases the virus remains dormant after one has has had a bout with chicken pox, resides near nerve endings and many years later pops up as cold sore type breakouts. Shingles is very painful and can be dangerous if located near the eyes. My shingles have been popping up along the sciatic nerve.
Someone can correct me if I have the details wrong.
