MUNICH, Germany -- Steffen Ufer didn't have to think long before agreeing to defend a Sudanese businessman against extradition to the U.S.
One of Germany's top criminal lawyers, the 60-year-old Bavarian thought the U.S. charges against Mamdouh Mahmud Salim were exaggerated, a view shared by German law-enforcement agencies. The allegation that Mr. Salim was a key figure in an international terrorist organization, al Qaeda, rang false, especially after Mr. Ufer got to know the gaunt, ascetic man from Khartoum. It was 1998 and two U.S. embassies had just been blown up in Africa, killing 224 people.

>>>>In addition,
Mr. Salim's contacts all frequented mosques that are under surveillance by German authorities for extremist tendencies. The links that Mr. Salim's friends had at
the mosques were so crucial that they almost led investigators to the ring of suspected hijackers three years ago.
The mosque that Mr. Darkazanli visited in Hamburg, al-Quds, is now known to have been frequented by some of the Sept. 11 hijackers. Three years ago, investigators noted that Mr. Darkazanli
worshipped there, and they began observing it. They noted that he spent time with one man in particular: Said Bahaji. In late 1998, around the time the investigators were observing Mr. Darkazanli, Mr. Bahaji had moved into Marienstrasse 54, home of
Mohammed Atta and Marwan el-Shehhi, allegedly the two pilots who crashed into the World Trade Center.<<<<
Just nice religious kids.
Did you read the part about the German wives sent back to Sudan etc, giving these creeps near-German citizenship, and their wives a life of hell?
Or how about Salim stabbing a prison guard in both eyes, blinding and paralyzing him?
Such a nice, peaceful, gentle religion.

It's too bad. We missed some arrests because we (Germans included) are too nice.

"I thought this was a typical example of American love of action," How socialist politics goes in the way of investigation and testing a US prejudice against a suspect. BAsicaly, what the Germans did was simply prevent the US from merely testing their hypothesis, something the US had a perfect right to do. This is typical of the anti-free speech, anti-free accademic endeavor and anti-free investigation mindset of Germany and socialist nations. It is trash and an abomination.

As for Mr. Salim, he still hasn't appeared in court. He was due to stand trial earlier this year with four co-defendants on conspiracy charges related to the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings. But last year, Mr. Salim is alleged to have stabbed a prison guard in the eyes with a comb sharpened into a dagger. The guard was blinded in both eyes and paralyzed on his right side.I knew there was a 5th guy who was supposed to stand trial with the other embassy bomber defendants, but that he had stabbed a guard in the eye and seriously injured him, so his trial was postponed.
I do hope, after he's convicted in embassy bombings case and the attempted murder of the guard, that the jury gives him his wish of being a martyr and gives him the death penalty. The Supermax in Florence, Colorado is too good for him.

Very interesting article, thanks. It tells you an awful lot about these people. They are dedicated, careful and seem to be entirely devoid of emotion. There aren't alot of obvious weaknesses to people like this, they will work every minute of every day for years toward one goal, never letting a single thing brush them aside.

ok, here we have a tidbit about German wives. I read an article a few days ago about a tractor trailer somewhere in the Widwest USA being driven by men from the Middle East who were in the company of a German woman. Am I mistaken? There was some kind of connection between middle eastern men and a German woman in recent weeks.
To: Benson_Carter
You are correct! Nice catch! I think it was the truck which dumped the furniture in PA, where the police found the camcorder with new video of the Sears Tower in it. I think the German female was in that story.
To: Travis McGee
so I'm right, this was the same story, the truck dumping furniture. Didn't the suspect flee the scene? HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU LET THESE FOLKS FLEE THE SCENE?!?!?!?! #$(*^(&*#!!!!
ok I'm going to dig this article up and link 'em together. stay tuned.
To: Benson_Carter
The truck/Sears Tower story is included at #24 on the Atlanta mystery cameras thread.

so what do you think?
To: Benson_Carter
I think we need to go into "OPERATION GLOBAL PHOENIX" full bore, and stop trailing and surveilling and start taking them out.

Good work!
I wonder if the FBI is closely monitoring all mosques in the US like the Germans seem to be doing ?
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
no they are monitoring them for 'protection' from would be vigilantes though. Um that's at least what they are telling them. shush your mouth.
