Better yet, why don't you ask him for proof that it ever HAS worked. It's been tried many times, and failed. His arguement will inevitably devolve into the same core arguement for Communism:

It hasn't worked yet because the right people haven't been in charge.

...to which, you can then simply ask, "Well, why is socialism always so attractive to the wrong people? Why are murderers and fools the ones so enamored of it?" ;)

I tried asking my socialist friend that I can't dump and she said New Zealand.

So I researched NZ and they were in the toilet!!!! because of Socialism. But at that time, they had just elected someone who knew economics and he said stop all programs, cut taxes to the bone and basically go under capitalism.

It worked so well that after a few years they started some of the programs again but if anyone says NZ they were destroyed and coming back. They will never learn.
