Well, I'd say we have more breaking news/higher volume, which is useful. There's certainly a trade-off though - fewer thoughtful, detailed discussions, IMO.

I think one of my all time favorite threads was "How do you know when you are spending too much time on FR?". A Freeper, and I think it was PhantomLord, replied, "When I sit down at my computer, my wife asks me if I'm on that G**D*** FreeRepublic site again. And I just say, No Dear, I'm downloading porn.
